In mid-March, Michael Heeb, VP of Safety, Talent Development & Sustainability, was nominated for the Volunteer of the Year award by the North Hill Curling Club (NHCC) in Calgary, AB. This award is presented to individuals who go above and beyond as volunteers in their communities. Notably, Michael was recognized for his involvement in the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024.
An avid curler and lover of the sport, he adopted a volunteer leadership role on the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games 2024 Planning Committee, with a focus on the curling events happening at NHCC. Beyond his “Venue Lead” duties, Michael supported other cross-functional groups on the committee, with coordination of food service, medical facilities, volunteer efforts, training sessions, opening ceremonies, and medal presentations.
“We are proud to have Michael on our team at Black Diamond, as he exemplifies and embodies our commitment of doing good in the communities where we live and work,” said Trevor Haynes Chairman & CEO. “Michael consistently goes above and beyond in support of our Company’s community investment initiatives and his own personal volunteerism – thank you and congratulations, Michael!”
Michael has been an active member of NHCC for more than five years, taking on leadership roles in the club. Most prominently, Michael coaches the junior league, driven by a passion to secure the longevity of the sport for generations to come.
Michael's recognition as Volunteer of the Year has further solidified his relationship with the North Hill Curling Club, where he has been invited to join the Board of Directors, taking on an even more significant leadership role, while continuing his coaching endeavours. He says his experiences with NHCC and the Special Olympics have reignited his passion for the sport, and solidified his personal decision to volunteer, when and as he is able.
"Volunteering has become a natural extension of who I am,” said Michael. “My experience and the level of comfort I've gained over the years have positioned me to support others. With curling, I find a unique focus and peace, but more broadly, I believe we all carry an obligation to our community. Knowing that my actions might positively influence someone else's growth and development brings a profound sense of fulfillment."
Congratulations on receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award, Michael!
