Black Diamond Group has been involved in the Gordie Howe CARES Pro-Am Hockey Tournament for a number of years and once again had the privilege of participating in this year's event from May 26th – May 28th. Our team, the Black Diamond Cutters, played in the two-day tournament that brings together teams to raise funds for Alzheimer's research and education initiatives, all while paying tribute to legendary hockey player Gordie Howe and his lasting impact on the sport we all know and love.
Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe
Gordie Howe, known as "Mr. Hockey," was a legendary Canadian professional ice hockey player who left an indelible mark on the sport.
Over his remarkable career, which spanned an astonishing 26 seasons, Howe established himself as one of the greatest players of all time. He set various records, including becoming the first player to score 1,000 career points and the only player to compete in the NHL past the age of 50.
In the later years of his life, Gordie Howe faced a challenging battle with Alzheimer's disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects memory, cognition, and behaviour. This debilitating condition, which affects millions of people worldwide, posed a significant challenge for one of hockey's greatest icons.
Gordie Howe's battle with Alzheimer's disease was a meaningful reminder that this devastating condition can affect anyone. His legacy now extends beyond his remarkable hockey career, inspiring others to come together, support one another, and strive for progress in Alzheimer's research and care.
