From June 6-9, 12 chainsaw carvers from around the world descended on the town of Chetwynd, B.C. for the 18th annual Chetwynd International Chainsaw Carving Championship Competition. The artists, who work with chainsaws and power tools to transform 40–50-inch diameter by 8-foot-tall pieces of western red cedar wood into works of art, have 35 hours to complete a sculpture of their own design, inspired by their own creativity and sheer talent!
Black Diamond Cygnus, our partnership with West Moberly First Nations, proudly sponsored carver Josh Dagg from Ottawa, Ont., who impressed judges and spectators with his beautiful carving of a giant koi fish.
The competition came to a head on Sunday, June 9, after the artists’ main pieces were complete, with an auction of the finished art and an awards ceremony.
First place went to Michael Jones from the U.K., with his life-like carving of a bucking bull. Second place was awarded to Jake Rhodes from Ontario and his impressive sculpture of a dinosaur duo. Finally, third place went to Sam Bowsher from the U.K. with his carving of a cheetah chasing a warthog. The carvers kept spectators and judges on their toes, displaying the best of their creativity, amazing skill and unique perspectives.
“Sponsoring a carver at the Chetwynd Chainsaw Carving Championship is an annual highlight for us,” says Jonathan Stringer, VP, WFS Operations & Indigenous Partnerships. “We were excited to sponsor Josh Dagg this year and were impressed with the piece he was able to create over the weekend. The annual competition is great for tourism and supporting local businesses in the area. With 2024’s event behind us, we look forward to sponsoring another carver in 2025.”
All 12 pieces remain in Chetwynd and are placed on Carvers Row. There are now over 250 carvings – ranging from animals to celebrities and movie characters – located throughout the town thanks to the event.
